Post-Tooth Extraction Healing Process
calendar_today 20.03.2026 person Dentatacity Editorial

First Hours After Extraction

The clot formed after the extraction is the most critical element of healing. To protect this clot:

  • Bite on the gauze pad for 30-45 minutes
  • Avoid spitting, using straws, and any movements that create pressure in the mouth
  • Do not smoke (for at least 72 hours)
  • Avoid hot foods and drinks
  • Apply ice to the extraction side (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off)

Healing Timeline

1-3 days: Mild bleeding, swelling, and pain are normal. Use prescribed medications regularly.

3-7 days: Swelling begins to decrease. Eat soft foods.

7-14 days: Stitches are removed. The wound starts to close.

1-3 months: Soft tissue completely heals. Bone begins to fill in.

When to Worry?

  • Increasing pain after the 3rd day post-extraction (dry socket)
  • Unstoppable bleeding
  • Fever or severe swelling
  • Numbness lasting more than 24 hours

If you experience any of these symptoms, call your doctor.
