What is Tooth Sensitivity?
Tooth sensitivity is a short, sharp pain felt in the tooth when exposed to hot, cold, sweet, sour foods and drinks, or cold air. It occurs due to the stimulation of nerve endings as a result of the exposure of the dentin layer.
Common Causes
- Enamel wear: Hard brushing, acidic foods
- Gum recession: Exposure of the root surface
- Cavities: Cavities reaching the dentin layer
- Teeth grinding: Can cause enamel cracks
- Post-whitening: Temporary sensitivity
- Old or cracked fillings
Treatment and Prevention
- Use toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth
- Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush
- Limit acidic foods and drinks
- Fluoride gel or varnish application (by a dentist)
- In advanced cases, dentin protection with bonding or crown
When to See a Dentist?
If sensitivity lasts longer than a few weeks or increases in severity, there may be a serious underlying issue. Early intervention is important.
