What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is the involuntary clenching or grinding of the teeth. It can occur during sleep at night (nocturnal bruxism) or during stressful moments in the day (diurnal bruxism). It is seen in approximately 8-13% of adults.

Symptoms

  • Jaw pain or tension upon waking up
  • Wear, breakage, or cracking of teeth
  • Chronic headaches, especially in the temple area
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain and sounds
  • Bite marks on the inside of the cheeks or edges of the tongue
  • Spouse hearing grinding sounds at night

Treatment Options

Night Guard (Splint)

A transparent splint prepared with a custom measurement is worn while sleeping at night. It creates a barrier between the teeth to prevent wear and reduces the load on the jaw joint.

Botox Treatment

Botox applied to the chewing muscles reduces muscle activity and decreases the intensity of clenching. Its effect lasts 3-6 months and can be repeated.

Stress Management

Stress is the most important trigger of bruxism. Meditation, exercise, and psychological support if necessary contribute to the treatment.
