Dental Health During Pregnancy
Pregnancy can cause an increase in gum inflammation (pregnancy gingivitis), gum growth, and risk of cavities due to hormonal changes. Oral care and dental check-ups are very important during this period.
In Which Trimester Can Treatment Be Performed?
- 1st Trimester (0-12 weeks): Elective treatments are postponed except for emergencies
- 2nd Trimester (13-27 weeks): Safe period. Fillings, extractions, and tartar cleaning can be done
- 3rd Trimester (28-40 weeks): Short emergency interventions can be performed, long session treatments are postponed until after birth
Safe Procedures
- Tartar cleaning and gum treatment
- Emergency treatment of painful teeth
- Fillings and extractions (2nd trimester is ideal)
Procedures to Avoid
- Teeth whitening procedures
- Treatments for aesthetic purposes
- Unnecessary X-rays (can be taken with a lead apron in mandatory cases)
Important Note
It is known that oral infections are associated with premature birth and low birth weight. Therefore, it is recommended to consult your doctor instead of ignoring tooth pain during pregnancy.
